When one thinks of Barney’s, they hardly think “discount retailer,” but its roots go back to being a leading discount store on the corner of 7th Avenue and 17th Street. From its opening in 1923 until 1976, the store exclusively sold men’s clothing, and would transform from being a discounter to a high-end retailer in the ’70s as well. The transformation would see leading and emerging designers from America and Europe. After years of additions and renovations, the store moved to its current location on 60th and Madison in 1993. Now, it’s hard to imagine Barney’s without thinking luxury. Proof that brands can truly reinvent and rebrand themselves successfully.
